President Bola Tinubu has nominated renowned tax expert and fiscal policy strategist, Taiwo Oyedele, as the new Minister of State for Finance, signaling what observers describe as a strategic consolidation of the administration’s tax reform agenda.

The nomination was formally communicated to the Senate on Tuesday. According to presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, the President conveyed Oyedele’s name to Senate President Godswill Akpabio for confirmation.

If confirmed, Oyedele will replace Doris Uzoka-Anite, who has been redeployed as Minister of State at the Ministry of Budget and National Planning ,marking her third ministerial portfolio under the Tinubu administration.

Uzoka-Anite was initially appointed as Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment in August 2023 before being reassigned in October 2024 to serve as Minister of State for Finance. Her latest redeployment reflects continued cabinet adjustments as the administration recalibrates its economic management team.

A Technocrat at the Helm

Oyedele’s nomination is widely viewed as a move to deepen fiscal reforms, given his role as Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms. Under his leadership, the committee drafted sweeping tax reform proposals aimed at restructuring Nigeria’s revenue architecture, improving tax administration, and enhancing compliance.

His academic background underscores his technocratic profile. Oyedele has undertaken executive education programmes at the London School of Economics, Yale University, Gordon Institute of Business Science, and the Harvard Kennedy School.

Professionally, he spent over two decades at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), where he built a reputation as a leading authority on tax policy and regulatory reform. He began his career at the firm in 2001 and rose through the ranks, advising both public and private sector institutions.

Beyond practice, Oyedele has maintained a strong presence in academia. He is a professor at Babcock University in Ogun State and serves as a visiting scholar at the Lagos Business School, bridging policy formulation with research and thought leadership.

Consolidating Tax Reform Momentum

Oyedele’s nomination comes months after President Tinubu signed into law four landmark tax reform bills drafted by the Presidential Committee he chaired. The bills ,the Nigeria Tax Bill, the Nigeria Tax Administration Bill, the Nigeria Revenue Service (Establishment) Bill, and the Joint Revenue Board (Establishment) Bill  were passed by the National Assembly after extensive debates and revisions.

The reforms aim to modernise Nigeria’s tax system, streamline revenue collection, eliminate overlapping tax authorities, and improve fiscal transparency. However, they also sparked intense public discourse over their potential impact on businesses and subnational governments.

Political analysts suggest Oyedele’s elevation to the Ministry of Finance could ensure smoother implementation of the new tax regime, aligning policy design with execution.

As Nigeria grapples with revenue shortfalls, mounting debt obligations, and the need for sustainable economic growth, the Senate’s confirmation process will be closely watched. For the Tinubu administration, the nomination represents both continuity and a renewed push toward fiscal restructuring.

All eyes are now on the National Assembly as the confirmation proceedings unfold.
